How To Break A Fashion Rut

I have a confession: I love routine. I know people say to embrace change and all that jazz, but if I like something I tend to stick with it. Saying that, when it comes to clothing this love for routine can get me in a relentless and boring cycle of wearing the same pieces over and over again all week long.

If you're like me and want to shake things up a bit, here are some tips to help you venture out of your clothing comfort zone:

Plan your outfit the night before. Planning is king when it comes to trying different looks and breaking a fashion rut, but you don't need to set aside a huge chunk of time or even fully plan out an outfit. All you have to do is look at your wardrobe the day or night before and pick out a couple of pieces that might look nice together or pieces that you haven't worn in a while but would like to. Put these somewhere in your room you'll clearly be able to see them for the next day and voila, you'll be wearing different style combos daily with barely any extra effort.

Find outfit inspiration from others. Places like Instagram, Youtube and Pinterest are amazing inspiration resources. When I want to change things up,  I like to find people on Youtube or Instagram with a different sense of style than mine and look at their outfits and how they're pairing pieces; doing this is a great way to get an injection of creativity style-wise. Some of my favourites are Sincerely Jules (@sincerelyjules) and Jessica Stein (@tuulavintage).

Embrace difference, from within your comfort zone. I've never been a dresses or skirts kind of girl. Jeans and shorts I love, but when it comes to dresses and skirts I just don't tend to feel as comfortable. Gradually, I've come to realise it's all about balance and now even I (the anti-dress girl) have been known to don a dress every now and then. How do I do it? It's a cheeky game I like to call "You can wear anything as long as you throw your favourite coat/jacket/cardigan on top." It's not uncommon to have items that only look good with certain other pieces, and this is sort of the same thing. Rather than me never wearing dresses, I now wear them under coats. Yes, they're 50% hidden by my coat but hey, I'm still wearing one and changing things up! The trick behind this idea is that the longer you wear something the more you start to feel comfortable, so eventually you'll feel content with an item of clothing that you originally wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

    1. Definitely, if I don't throw at least a few clothing options out I always just end up wearing the same thing, which gets so boring!

  11. These are all great tips that I also swear by. I love to plan my outfits the night before and maybe push myself a little out of my comfort zone sometimes with choices (particularly when I'm the kind of person who generally sticks with the same things I know I love, it's good to have a wardrobe refresh). I do this when it comes to things like hats, which I love but don't always wear. I'll set myself a little challenge to plan an outfit that includes one to mix things up a little.

The Sartorialist and Stockholm Street Style blogs are also great places for outfit inspiration. Some of the looks are a little out there for me, but there are definitely a few interesting styling tricks you can pick up from checking out other people's clothes.

  18. A routine girl right here, too! I think planning is key when deciding and changing outfits; it's how I'm able to reuse the same pieces of clothing to create different looks and people hardly ever notice, ha! And trying clothes out of your comfort zone is a great great way to jazz things up, too!

  33. I'm more of the experimental type and prefer colours and patterns but at times I do get stuck in a rut. My tip is to have a few pieces that you wouldn't normally wear but keep anyway and when you're bored of your wardrobe, get one of these pieces and it'll feel like a new thing to wear each time
