5 Reasons To Buy A Trench Coat

I'm all for warm weather but when it comes to fashion, the cooler months have my heart. Don't get me wrong I love my shorts and my breezy shirts, but any weather that restricts me from wearing coats tends to cripple me style-wise. I often feel like my outfits just aren't complete without a nice coat thrown on top. I just really love coats okay?

Last year I discovered the humble trench and I haven't looked back since. Okay that's a lie. I have looked back, but only to slap myself for not buying a trench coat sooner. Incase you're not convinced, here are 5 reasons why a trench coat would be the perfect addition to your wardrobe:

1.) They never go out of style. (Anyone else now have that Taylor Swift song in their head?)
Trench coats are known as 'staples' and 'classics' for a reason, crop tops and high-waisted pants will come and go but trench coats are here to stay. Depending on your personal style you might go with a coloured trench or opt for a classic beige like I have. Either way, you can feel completely justified in investing in a nice trench coat because it'll last you for years.

2.) They fit right in with your current wardrobe.
My least favourite thing is when I buy a new piece of clothing and I'm all excited, only to bring it home and realise it doesn't actually match anything else I have. You won't get that with a trench coat though, especially if you opt for a neutral shade like grey, navy, black or beige. Pair it with skirts or over dresses, with casual tees, jeans, shorts, suit pants, whatever you fancy. This isn't a piece that'll require you to do any extensive outfit planning before you wear it, just throw it on top of whatever you're already wearing and call it a day.

3.) They can easily dress up an outfit.
If you're stuck in one of those situations where you need to look neatly dressed but you're low on time and you don't have anything that quite fits the bill, embrace your trench. A classic longline trench coat (the more tailored the better) paired with a nice bag and any pair of heels you have will instantly up your classy factor. Heads up, if you're trying to sound classy don't actually say 'classy factor' in public, that'll probably have the opposite effect...

4.) They can easily dress down an outfit.
Polar opposite situation, but if you have a fancy dress or a formal outfit that you'd really like to wear during the day but it's a little much for brunch or coffee with friends, it's a trench to the rescue again. Go ahead and wear that dressy outfit, but try pairing it with a neutral trench, toned down makeup and boots or even sneakers. Easy peasy.

5.) They instantly pull your look together.
Aside from the odd streaker that dons a trench coat (sorry for that mental image), generally speaking no one ever looks at someone wearing a trench and says "Gee, they're looking really scruffy today." So even if you frantically put on whatever clothes were closest to you in the morning, pairing it with a trench is a great choice for if you want to look like you've actually put some effort into your outfit. Sometimes I really don't put any effort whatsoever into what I'm wearing, yet when I put my trench on somehow it looks like I've strategically planned my entire look? Now you all know my secret....wear whatever and add that trench!

Looking back sticking to neutrals in coats is really the way to go for me as my bright red one along with a hot pink coat I chose never quite became the great buy I thought they were going to be. (who'd have guessed?)

  82. Love the slim, modern cut of your trench. Heartily agree with your article - I bought a navy blue trench and it ticks all of your points above. It's my coat for travelling - looks smart but also practical - lots of pockets.
